Ziza Municipium

Zian

Ziza Municipium is Zita, a Roman municipium on the Zarzis peninsula near the island of Djerba, at today's Zian in Tunisia. A stone causeway, whose remains still survive, led across to the island, which is why the Roman register of routes calls the town Ponte Zita, Zita at the bridge. Its name probably comes from the Phoenician word for the olive tree. Older research noted a fortress, a temple with marble statues, an amphitheatre and cisterns, and an inscription of AD 196 from Lambaesis names it as a centurion's home. A crease has left the initial Z faint.
