Zepyrium
Zefre · Gülburnu
Zepyrium is a slip for Zephyrium, a name meaning exposed to the west wind, which is why so many coastal places bore it. This one was a fortified harbour on the Black Sea coast west of Trabzon, by the headland now called Çam Burnu, in the land of the mountain-dwelling Mossynoeci; an older Greek guide calls it the West Wind Harbour. Two tiny harbours remain, and on a low hill above them stood a small fort, perhaps a signal post watching the coast road. Looters damaged it badly, and it has since vanished, probably under the works for the modern road.
