Zama Regia

Jama (Barrington) · Elles, Lehs (Miller)

Zamareigia is Zama Regia, the royal Zama of the Numidian kings, in Tunisia, whose exact site is still debated, perhaps at Jama. Near Zama, in 202 BC, Scipio defeated Hannibal in the decisive battle of the war with Carthage. King Juba later kept his treasure and his household here, and in the war against Jugurtha a Roman army had attacked the town. Under Hadrian it became a Roman colony. The map runs the two words of the name together into one.
