Vosavia

Oberwesel

Vosavia is Vosolvia, today Oberwesel on the Rhine in Germany, an originally Celtic settlement on the road along the river. The milestone of Tongeren still has the older form Vosolvia; the map's Vosavia is the younger form, probably shaped by Germanic speech, which suggests that the entry is late. An inscription to Maia and Mercury from the second century has been found here, and late Roman graves held bronze fittings from soldiers' belts. A fortified crossing of the Rhine may have stood here in late Roman times, but it has not yet been found.
