Bingium

Bingen

Bingium is Bingen in Germany, where the Nahe flows into the Rhine and the road from Trier came down to meet the road along the river. In the year 70 the rebel leader Julius Tutor fell back here, trusting the place because he had broken down the bridge over the Nahe, but he was defeated all the same; the bridge was rebuilt around 77 on a grid of piles, as its timbers show. In 359 the town received new walls, which the poet Ausonius mentions in the opening lines of his poem on the Moselle. On the map the great bend of the Rhine at Bingen cannot be seen.
