Bigeste

Ljubuški · Kastell Gračine in Humac

Bigeste lay at Humac near Ljubuški in Herzegovina, where the Romans held a fortified camp on the Gračine field by the river Trebižat. Excavations show that a fort stood here already between 53 and 39 BC, during Rome's first great war with the Dalmatae, and a walled fortress soon after. Under Augustus a detachment of a legion built and manned it, followed by auxiliary cohorts until the end of the second century; their brickworks made tiles of fine quality. A civilian settlement grew across the river, reached by a bridge, and the soldiers built a temple to Liber and Libera.
