Bitenas

bei İnecik

Bitenas, near today's İnecik in eastern Thrace, stands in the accusative, 'towards Bitenas'. The Roman geographer Mela, writing in AD 43 or 44, names it first, as Bytinis; the Bordeaux pilgrim's itinerary calls the change of horses here Bedizo, and the Ravenna list Bithena. The name is Thracian. From the late 8th century the place appears as Chalkis, the seat of a bishop. On the map the road line on to Apris was never drawn.
