Volocesia

Volocesia was founded by the Parthian king Vologeses, a contemporary of Nero and Vespasian, as a rival meant to harm Seleucia, as Pliny tells it. It probably lay on the Naarmalcha canal near Seleucia, perhaps at Abu Halafiya in Iraq. Ptolemy draws it beside a lake with three mouths of the Euphrates, much as the map does at Diotahi, so both apparently go back to an old map of the world. The map puts it eighteen Roman miles from Babylonia, and the photograph of 1888 shows the second letter most clearly as an o.
