Hostia Fluminis Tygris
Listen to the story
Only a few black letters in the sea survive of Hostia Fluminis Tygris, the label marking where the river Tigris reaches the coast. Today the writing lies in two faded lines, and only the abbreviation for 'river' in the upper line can still be read. Older copies give the full phrase, 'the mouths of the river Tigris', and that reading seems right, because the map labels the mouths of the Rhône and of the Danube in just the same way.
