Finicum et Syriacum Pelagus

Meer längs der phönizisch-syrischen Küste (Miller)

Listen to the story

Finicum et Syriacum Pelagus, the Phoenician and Syrian sea, names the waters along the coasts of Phoenicia and Syria, roughly modern Lebanon and Syria. The geographer Ptolemy called this stretch the Syrian sea, and the Roman writer Pliny called it the Phoenician sea. The map joins both names. The lettering has badly faded, and only fragments can still be read. Even close study of the parchment leaves some letters doubtful, and one S stands out so large that it may belong to another word. Older copies give the full name, and the final word, pelagus, the Greek for open sea, is almost certain.
