Lacus Musiris

See östlich von Cranganūr (Vambanad-See)

Listen to the story

Lacus Musiris probably lies today in the Vembanad lagoon in southern India, the stretch of water east of Cranganur, where the port of Muziris once stood. Muziris was a key harbour of Rome's pepper and spice trade, and early imperial writers, among them the Roman author Pliny, describe it on a large body of water open to the sea. The lake's label was written in two lines inside the water itself, but it has faded almost completely. Older copies read the full name, while today only traces of black ink and a single letter A can be made out.
