Aecium Mare

Listen to the story

Aecium Mare is little more than a ghost of lettering in open water, below the coastal road between Zorlanis and Aprodisia. Only the letters A, E and M, A can still be made out, best on a photograph taken in 1888. The second word was almost certainly mare, the sea, but the first stays uncertain and matches no ancient source. An edition printed in 1598 still read Aecium in full. It may have meant the sea off the town of Aenos, or it may be a garbled repeat of the Aegean. The water here is the ancient Melas Gulf, the Gulf of Saros in Turkey.
