Road station
Xeron
Wadi Gerf (Barrington)
Xeron is the fort of Xeron Pelagos at Wadi Gerf, on the desert road from Coptos to Berenike, which the Roman register of routes calls Aristonis instead. Measuring forty-four by thirty-three metres, it was one of the larger forts on the way to the Red Sea, and it has yielded a large haul of inscribed potsherds, though the name itself rarely appears in writing. Pottery shows the station in use from late in the first century until about the middle of the third, and the last securely dated texts come from AD 264.
