Affrodites

Koser (Miller) · Wadi Menih el-Heir · Khawr ej-Jir (Barrington)

Affrodites, a fort on the desert road from Coptos to Berenike, lay in the Wadi Menih el-Heir. An inscription found here records how, in AD 76 or 77, the prefect Iulius Ursus had the desert searched for water and fortified posts built wherever it was found, on a route first developed under Augustus or Tiberius. On the map the station has swapped places with its neighbour Didymos: the Roman register of routes and the Ravenna list both put Didymos first, and the copyist seems to have mixed the two up.
