Dydymos

Khashm el-Menih · Zeydun (Barrington)

Dydymos is Didymoi, a fort on the desert road from Coptos to Berenike, founded around AD 76 by the prefect of Egypt and one of the more important road stations of the Eastern Desert. Walls and towers protected its garrison, and under Domitian and Marcus Aurelius its water storage was enlarged; pipes brought water from further away, and there was even a small bath house. Finds of fine clothing and textiles, coins and raw glass show both its part in long-distance trade and the spending power of its soldiers. It was given up for good around the middle of the third century.
