Dyosinopoli

Balchik

Dyosinopoli is Dionysopolis, today Balchik on the Black Sea. Its older name was Krounoi, the springs, after the waters that run down to the shore, and it was renamed, the story went, when a statue of Dionysus was washed up from the sea. An inscription honours a citizen, Akarnian, who went as envoy to the Dacian king Burebista and on his behalf to Pompey, and who took on the priesthood of Dionysus when for years no one had held it. The map's thirty-two miles from Odessos are too many; twenty-four suffice.
