Listen to the story

Lato is Latopolis, the city of the latus, a Nile fish held sacred here, at Esna on the west bank of the Nile. Its great monument is the temple of Khnum, begun under the later Ptolemies; its pillared hall dates from the first century AD and was built under emperors from Claudius to Decius, and several emperors are depicted worshipping Khnum and other gods. Because the modern town stands on top of the ancient one, the temple lies nine metres below street level. Pachomius came from here, and in 345 he founded his last monastery in the region.
