Laudicia Scabiosa

Tell Nebi Mend (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Laudicia Scabiosa is Laodicea by Lebanon, a city founded by Seleucus Nicator in the broad plain of Marsyas and the capital of its own district. Its odd surname, which sounds like Latin for scabby, appears in Ptolemy as Kabiosa. The city seems to have declined early, and its ruins lie at Tell Nebi Mend in Syria. The map counts ten Roman miles from Deleda and twenty on to Nemesa, but draws that last stretch as two and leaves its start unmarked.
