Ombos
Kom Ombo
Ombos is Kom Ombo on the east bank of the Nile, where from the reign of Ptolemy the Sixth a great double temple rose for Haroeris and Sobek; its ruin is still well preserved. The town flourished after the temple was built, became the capital of its district and served as a garrison throughout its history, still holding a legion around AD 400. By 402 it was a bishop's seat, and in the fifth and sixth centuries it suffered raids by the Blemmyes. The map's twelve miles from Syene look too short; the Roman register of routes has thirty.
