Oneo

Omiš

Oneo is Oneum, today Omiš in Croatia, a fortified place at the mouth of the Cetina, settled since prehistoric times. In AD 37 or 38 a Roman camp prefect fixed the boundary between its people and their neighbours, the Narestini. Inscriptions honour Hercules, the Great Mother and the emperors, and remains of walls, water pipes, graves and an early Christian church have been found. On the map the stage on to In Aronia is given as twelve miles, but the real distance is twenty-four, about thirty-five kilometres, so a station has probably dropped out.
