Octoduro

Martigny

Octodvro is Octodurus, today Martigny in Switzerland, the chief village of the Celtic Veragri at the foot of the Great Saint Bernard. In 57 BC Caesar's legate Galba wintered here, but the Veragri attacked his camp and the attempt to secure the pass failed with heavy losses. Under Claudius a new town was founded close by, Forum Claudii, with Latin rights, as the capital and seat of the governor of the new Alpine province of the Valais. A milestone of Constantine's time, probably set up on the pass, gives twenty-four Roman miles to Forum Claudii, close to the map's twenty-five.
