Olympum

Tsourba Mandra

Olympum is the fortress that Philip the Fifth of Macedon renamed Olympias after Mount Olympus, on whose slopes it lay, to press his claim to it; its old name was Gonnocondylus. In 185 BC the Perrhaebians asked for it back, as the Roman historian Livy tells. It lay at Tsourba Mandra in Thessaly, where a Hellenistic tomb, pottery, grave inscriptions and a dedication to Egyptian gods have been found. The map's form of the name seems to confuse the fortress with the mountain itself.
