Opitergio

Oderzo

Listen to the story

Opitergium, now Oderzo in the Veneto, sided with Caesar in the civil war, and its men became famous: trapped on a raft in the Adriatic in 49 BC, soldiers from Opitergium chose to kill one another rather than surrender, a scene the poet Lucan described. Caesar rewarded the town with freedom from taxes. Mosaics of hunting scenes survive from its late Roman houses, and after the Lombards destroyed it in the seventh century, its people founded a new town, Cittanova.
