Listen to the story

Ofiunte took its name from the Ophis, the snake river, at whose mouth it lay on the Black Sea coast, at Of in Turkey. A tear in the parchment has left only a downstroke of the second letter. The early printed editions and older research read a p, Opiunte, but the gap is probably too narrow for it, and both the Ravenna list and the modern town name point to an f. A Greek guide to the coast says the river offered an anchorage fit for ships and marked the border of the Colchians. Briefly, in the late 5th century, the place was a bishop's seat.
