Road station
Magnana
Maçka, ehem. Cevizlik · Djevislik
Magnana, at Maçka in the valley above Trabzon, is most likely the local name of the station that the Roman register of routes calls Ad Vicensimum, at the twentieth, meaning the twentieth milestone from Trapezus, about thirty kilometres. Byzantine sources know it as Dikaisimon, and the modern name echoes Matzouka, the medieval name of the whole valley. Here the two road books part ways: the register swings off on a wide detour, while the map follows a shorter route over the higher mountains, perhaps a summer road, perhaps the one Xenophon's Ten Thousand had marched. From here on the map's figures run about a quarter too high.
