Patara

Madenhanları · Maden hanları

Listen to the story

Patara, not the harbour in Lycia but a mountain station on the summer road from Trapezus to Satala, is placed with some caution at Maden Hanları. The spot lies at about 2,500 metres in a sheltered hollow on the flank of the Çakırgöl Dağ, among meadows fed by two streams that never run dry; nearby iron mines gave the hamlet its modern name. No ancient remains are visible; today a few sturdy summer houses serve as informal inns. On the map the figure for the next stretch, fourteen miles or about twenty-one kilometres, starts with an undersized stroke, yet it is a numeral, not a dot.
