Patinae

Paithan · Pratiṣṭhāna

Patinae is Paithana, the ancient Pratishthana and today Paithan, on the river Godavari in central India. It was the capital of the Satavahana kings, and the geographer Ptolemy calls it the royal seat of Siriptolemaios, the Indian king Sri Pulumayi of the second century AD. A Greek handbook for merchants puts it twenty days' journey from the port of Barygaza and names it as a place that exported precious stones; ten days further on lay Tagara, a market for cotton cloth. The map gives it as a lone name with no roads.
