Gizenenica

? Hortokop

Gizenenica appears only on this map and, perhaps as Chaszanenica, in a late Roman list of commands from around 400, which stations a cavalry regiment, the First Jovian Ala, there. It may have stood at Hortokop, a hill 360 metres above the valley of the ancient Pyxites, overlooking traces of a Roman road that climbed towards the Zigana pass. The hill carries the remains of a roughly circular wall, medieval but probably on Roman foundations, and coins found there run from the 1st century BC to Ottoman times. Another suggestion puts the station at Meşeiçihani, the inn in the forest.
