Girba

Houmt-Souk, Djerba (Tunisia)

Girba was a town on Meninx, the island of the Lotus-eaters, and later its name passed to the whole island, which is still called Djerba, off the coast of Tunisia. The map sets it on the island's north-western side, so it probably stood where Houmt Souk, the main town, lies now. Here the overseer of the imperial purple dye works seems to have had his seat. Bishops of Girba are recorded from 256, and in 525 one of them represented the province of Tripolitania at Carthage. Most manuscripts of Ptolemy garble the name as Gerra.
