Island
Insula Girba
Djerba (Miller) · Gerba (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Off the coast of Tunisia lies Djerba, the island known to the Romans as Insula Girba. The map itself never names it: four settlements are marked there, Girba, Tipasa, Haribus and Uchium, and there would have been ample room for a label, yet none was written. Even so, the Tabula is the fullest ancient source for the island, although without distances the four towns cannot be placed with certainty. Its older name was Meninx, a town famed for purple dyeing, and the Greek scholar Eratosthenes called it the island of the lotus-eaters, the people of Homer's Odyssey.
