Island
Insula Faria
Hvar
Listen to the story
Greek settlers from the Aegean island of Paros founded a colony on Insula Faria, today Hvar in Croatia, in 385 or 384 BC, and the name kept their memory: the Greek geographer Strabo notes that Pharos was once called Paros. Its ancient town lay at Stari Grad. Rome conquered it in 219 BC, and under the emperors settlers from Salona divided its land into surveyed plots. The map spells the name with an F, and in the Middle Ages the Romance speakers of Dalmatia called it Fara.
