Island

Insula Erkronis

Otok Silba? (Pago · Pag Miller)

Listen to the story

The island of Silba, off the Croatian coast, is the likeliest match for Insula Erkronis. It is a fertile island on a busy shipping lane, and archaeologists have found a late Roman quay, early Christian sarcophagi, amphorae in the water and a shipwreck from the first century. Older research preferred the island of Pag, but Pag already appears on the map under another name. The name itself is suspect: the letter k occurs nowhere else on the Tabula, and that long stroke may really be a joined a and f, giving Erafronis, close to Erafronia in a list of places compiled in Ravenna.
