Insulae Herculis

Listen to the story

Three small islands set in a neat row carry the name Insulae Herculis, the islands of Hercules. The name has faded, and only its first letters survive; older copies read it in full, and although no ancient writer records such a name, the reading seems natural. Where the islands lie is disputed. One proposal is the Sirenusae, three small uninhabited islands belonging to Campania, though the map then draws them far from that coast. Other scholars think no known island group can be matched to them at all.
