Island

Insula Herculis

Isola Basiluzza

Listen to the story

Only a clipped, abbreviated label marks this island on the Tabula, and spelled out it reads Insula Herculis, the island of Hercules, named after the hero whose wanderings carried him across the whole Mediterranean. It is usually placed at Basiluzzo, a small islet among the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. Yet a list of places compiled in Ravenna names both the island of Hercules and Basiluzzo separately, so it may instead be Lisca Bianca or another islet nearby. The Roman geographer Pomponius Mela knew it as Heraclea.
