Island
Insula Issa
Vis
The Croatian island of Vis, out in the Adriatic off the Dalmatian coast, is Insula Issa, marked on the map by its name alone, one letter of which has faded. People lived here as early as Neolithic times, but the island's great age began in the late fourth century BC, when settlers from Syracuse arrived and made it one of the most important Greek settlements among the Dalmatian islands, founding colonies of their own, among them Trogir. Rome declared its town a free and allied city in 230 or 229 BC, and the Greek writer Agatharchides praised its excellent wine.
