Island
Insula [Lero
Île St-Marguerite
Listen to the story
Insula Lero is the island known today as Île Sainte-Marguerite, off the coast of France, and its ancient name survives in the Lérins Islands, the small group it belongs to. On the map the name has almost vanished: only a few scattered letters remain, and older copies show the island either unnamed or with just its first letters. The reading is backed by the Roman writer Pliny, who lists Lero among the islands of this coast. The Greek geographer Strabo knew a shrine of the hero Leron here, and the waters around it were famous for coral fishing.
