Listen to the story
Insula Milos is the Greek island of Milos, the westernmost of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. On the map the name has faded badly: only a faint 'Ins' and a closing 'os' can still be made out, and older copies read it in full, which would mean the missing letters were widely spaced. The island's Greek name recalls the word for apple, and its coins showed one. In 416 BC Athens conquered it and punished its people harshly, the episode the historian Thucydides turned into his famous Melian Dialogue. The Venus de Milo was found in its ancient town.
