Island
Insula N.N.
Listen to the story
Insula N.N. is simply the label for an island the map leaves without a name, set opposite Hippo Diarrhytus, today's Bizerte, and Cabraca on the African coast. Its whole shoreline is traced in red as well as black, and on it stands a temple drawn as a polygon with six or eight sides, framed in red. It is usually taken for Aegimurus in the Gulf of Carthage, now Zembra in Tunisia, perhaps the rocks the poet Virgil calls the Altars. It probably served ships crossing from Sicily to Africa as a stopover.
