Island
Insula Leucadia
Leukas, Leukada (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Along the western shore of a drawn island runs the name Insula Leucadia, set vertically and now so faded that only the letters Leuca can still be made out; the printed editions of 1598 and 1753 still read the full name. This is Lefkada in Greece. It was originally a peninsula, until the Corinthians cut through the isthmus, as the Greek geographer Strabo reports. The canal that parted it from the mainland was called the Dioryktos, and a road station on the map, Per Diorycto, takes its name from it. The Roman writer Pliny adds that the island was once called Neritum.
