Island
Insula [Lerone
Île St-Honorat
Listen to the story
Île Saint-Honorat, a small island off the French coast near Cannes, is the likely match for Insula Lerone. The label has badly faded: only the word for island and the letters Le can still be made out, and the rest is reconstructed with help from the geographer Ptolemy, who lists an island called Lerone. The Roman writer Pliny names two neighbouring islands, Lero and Lerina, whose name survives in today's Lérins Islands, and scholars disagree which of them this is and which the island drawn beside it. Oddly, the map sets both far too far west, near Narbonne.
