Island

Insula Monsis

Isulia di Ponta

Listen to the story

Among the Mediterranean islands on the map lies one labelled Insula Monsis, though that label is shaky. The name has faded, and today only the word for island can be read; an older copy gave Monsis, a reading no ancient source supports. The island is usually identified as Ponza, the Pontia where, according to the Roman writer Suetonius, emperors sent exiles to a rocky but well-farmed shore. Montecristo has also been suggested, and scholars doubt that the mapmaker's island can be identified at all.
