Insula nomen nescio, Latin for 'island, name unknown', is the label given to this piece of land among the Mediterranean islands of the map, where it is counted as island number fifty-two. The shape of the island is there, but no trace of a name can be seen beside it, not even a faded or damaged letter. So it floats on the parchment as simply an island, one of the few places on the map that never received a name.
