Island
Insula Iovis
Giglio
Listen to the story
Among the islands drawn off the Italian coast is Insula Iovis, identified with Giglio in the Tuscan archipelago, which the Romans called Igilium. It bears the name of Jupiter, the sky god who ruled the weather that sailors feared. The lettering has almost vanished: only the first word, the abbreviation for island, can still be read. Older copies still give the full name. A list of places compiled in Ravenna names an island Iobus or Iobis, which fits the same reading.
