Nyssillime

Araklı, ehem. Standort von Sürmene

Nyssillime is a garbled Hyssou Limen, the harbour of the river Hyssos, the modern Karadere, at Araklı on the Black Sea coast east of Trabzon. When Arrian sailed along this coast in AD 130 or 131, his first stop out of Trapezus was here, and he drilled the infantry stationed at the port. An older Greek name was less flattering: the harbour of the mangy. Later the place was Sousourmena, a village on the edge of the territory of Trapezus, and a late Roman list of offices places a cohort of Roman citizens here. The map, short of space, folds this whole stretch of coast sideways.
