Reila
Rize
Reila is a garbled form of the name of Rize, the Rhizaion or Rhizous harbour of Greek writers, perhaps already hard to read in the map's model. The place lay at the mouth of the river Rhizios on the Black Sea, with a fairly sheltered harbour and a natural acropolis. Procopius calls it an insignificant little place that Justinian turned into a fortress. Legend tells that Orentius, one of seven martyred brothers, was drowned in the sea off its shore under the emperor Maximian. In the Middle Ages the town was known as Risso.
