Regio

Kücükcekmece

On the map Regio stands without its road line: a copyist forgot to draw the red stroke here, on the last stretch of the Via Egnatia before Constantinople. The place is Rhegion, today's Küçükçekmece, at the narrow outlet of a lagoon into the Sea of Marmara. A wooden bridge over that outlet kept collapsing until Justinian replaced it with one of stone, and he rebuilt the town after the earthquake of 557. Its Greek name, the breach, may echo Rhegium in southern Italy. Excavations found a palace of the 5th or 6th century with a chapel, and a church with a baptistery.
