Reate
Rieti
Listen to the story
Reate, now Rieti on the river Velino, was with Amiternum the chief town of the Sabines on the Via Salaria. The Roman scholar Varro came from here, and Cicero, on a visit, was taken to see a valley the locals proudly called their Tempe, after the famous beauty spot in Greece. The historian Livy repeatedly reports prodigies from Reate, among them a mule born with three feet, and the father of the emperor Vespasian settled here and married.
