Athenis

bei Pazar, ehem. Atina

Athenis, at Pazar on the Black Sea coast, a place formerly called Atina, set ancient writers guessing about its name. One coastal guide traced it to a Greek sanctuary of Athena, and mentions a neglected fort and a small anchorage, sheltered from most winds but not from the north. Procopius rejects the idea of Athenian settlers: the village, he says, was named after a woman called Athenaia who once ruled the land, and her tomb could still be seen in his day. Later research suspects a local Laz word for a shady place. On the map the final s is lost to damage in the parchment.
