Cissa

Kise

Cissa owes its first appearance as an inhabited place to this map; Ptolemy names only the mouth of the river Kissa, in the land of the Kissioi. Oddly, Arrian's account of his voyage along this Black Sea coast leaves it out, although the map shortens such sources far more often than it adds to them. The name lives on in the village of Kise in Turkey, and medieval sea charts call it Quissa or Quixa. Its castle dates from the 15th century, and over time the centre seems to have moved on to a better anchorage at Hopa.
