Circeios

Circello (Miller)

Listen to the story

Circeios is Circeii, below Monte Circeo, the mountain where Homer's enchantress Circe was said to have lived. The Roman writer Pliny notes that it had once been an island, as Homer believed, and was now joined to the plain. Rome planted a colony here early on, its oysters were famous, and after his fall the triumvir Lepidus was banished here. Its walls of great polygonal blocks still stand on the hill above San Felice Circeo.
